Welcome back – to you and to me! It’s been a long time, and I’m now returning after feeling inspired to pick up my camera and capture some of what’s been happening around here on the farm. Namely, some of the beautiful flowers and basil growing in my garden now.
My intent with this “Five from the Farm” series is to continue to document current highlights. In the garden, with the chickens, or the sheep. With the land. Or, my latest obsession (flowers!). Five photos and short descriptions to give you a glimpse inside my world out here in the country.
Marigolds blooming. I started these from seed and don’t remember the variety, but they are beautiful. The stems are around 5″ long with thick foliage.I purchased this Pincushion Flower plant from my favorite, independent local nursery, Morningsun Herb Farm. It is thriving in full sun in the middle of my garden. The bees love it!
Another plant I purchased on impulse. This dahlia was big and full of blooms last year. At the end of the season, I left it in the garden all winter and it came back! It’s not as large this time around and I’ve only seen 2 flowers at a time. Side note: I’m currently growing some dahlias from seed, so we will see how that goes…
Red Rubin Basil. I think the name is deceptive, but in a good way because purple is my favorite color. I planted several of these from seed, and they are doing really well in my tall raised planters. This is the most success I’ve ever had with basil. p.s. I think that green plant behind it is a volunteer Ground Cherry TBD.
Finally, some sunflowers. There are Rouge Royale that I planted directly into my experimental cut flower plot back in March. This was my first time growing sunflowers and now I’m starting hundreds of seeds since they thrive in the hot, sunny spot I have for them in my garden. This variety has deep red petals and branching blooms.
I’m writing this on March 29. Technically, I should be way further along with my spring garden but it’s been incredibly rainy and as I’ve decided to implement some new tactics, I’ve been spending more time than usual planning my spring garden.
