Finding the Perfect Backyard Birdbath

Since I already wrote about how I take care of the hummingbirds in our backyard in this post, I figured it was about time to write about the other ways I’ve tried to create a nice sanctuary for all of the birds in our backyard. This post is all about finding the perfect backyard birdbath.

After some strong rains, I noticed the finches gathering around to drink from the puddles of water on the wine barrel rain collector. This didn’t seem all that pleasant, so I decided to look into birdbath options and fountains to give them a more proper place to bathe and refresh.

We have the most incredible place called Pottery Paradise not too far from our home. They have an endless array of pottery from all around the world in all shapes, sizes, colors, materials, and styles. Everything is arranged outdoors. It is almost overwhelming but in the most wonderful way. It is a family-run business and the wonderful owners are always ready to help if you’re looking for something specific.

Since I always try to support local businesses and was almost certain they’d have the perfect birdbath, Pottery Paradise was my first stop. And I was correct! I found several great birdbaths in all shapes and sizes made of stone and pottery. The decision was not easy! Another thing I appreciate about Pottery Paradise is that they usually have several options at different price points. This being my first birdbath, I wasn’t ready to make a huge investment but also wanted something well-made and aesthetically pleasing.

After taking a lot of time to decide, I kept coming back to the pretty green ceramic birdbath. It was a classic style with a pillar base and a wide bowl.

I also thought it would be fun to add a fountain element to the birdbath but again, I didn’t want it to be a huge investment or complicated set-up. After doing some research, I discovered solar-powered fountains! What a brilliant invention. This was the perfect solution for what I wanted. I ended up with a Mademax Solar Birdbath Fountain Pump. You can check it out from the link at the end of this post. It fits perfectly in the birdbath and as long as the sun is shining, it creates a very peaceful fountain that the birds love. The kit comes with several different attachments that create various designs with the water. I started with the tallest attachment but I think it was startling for the birdies, so I tried a smaller one, and that seemed to work much better.

The solar panels don’t “store” energy to run the fountain, so the sun needs to be hitting the panels for it to work. I think this is a great feature because there’s no need to turn it on and off and it won’t run unnecessarily at night when the birds aren’t around.

This simple set-up has brought so much joy to both me and the birds in our backyard. They love hanging out on the edge of the bowl to drink water and also love splashing around in the water to have a nice, refreshing bath. It’s so entertaining to watch.
